Ybor city jazz house more to brandom11/20/2023 A hen named Gypsy and roosters Scooter and Bob were honored at the parade and buried in the cemetery.īy 2007, with more than 500 attending the event that included a live jazz band, it became too big and expensive for Stephens to handle. Over the years, other favorite chickens were memorialized. Rooster Funeral and Procession and The Doodle Doo Parade. Honoring the bird became an annual event known as both The James E. When you think of Ybor chickens and roosters, you think of Tommy.”Īccording to news archives, more than 100 people attended, many wearing tongue-in-cheek rooster-inspired attire with R-rated puns. “He is just a wonderful character.”Īdded Manny Alvarez, who was Stephens’ neighbor for three decades before selling his own Ybor home last year, “He’s an absolute Ybor icon. “He brought a lot of flavor and neighborly interaction,” said Chris Wojtowicz, his neighbor of nearly a decade. Some in Ybor are mourning what they call the end of an era with Stephens leaving. “They were buried in old feedbags, so I doubt there is much left to them,” said Stephens, who then added with a laugh: “But maybe they could dig up the sandals I buried with Chicken Nugget because he liked to mate with them.” If a new owner decides against maintaining the bird burial ground, Stephens has Ybor friends who might place the headstones on their property so that the legacy lives on symbolically. One stipulation he would like met is that the headstones remain. The house is under contract, but nothing is certain, Stephens said. disappoint.when we first arrived, i was unaware that there were multiple levels.we ordered a round and just enjoyed the music and was Halloween weekend so the sights were even more impressive than usual i'm sure.checked in with the bartender and learned that the upper 2 levels opened at 10pm and 12am (i believe) and seeing how we arrived just after midnight, we headed upstairs to see what was up.2nd floor's DJ had us buying drinks and burning those calories right off with that mix!! we were there for about an hour before i noticed my friends hadn't come back LOL so to the rooftop we went!!! talk about ROCKIN!! i didnt think the jams could get any better than what i had been listening to below but found myself with another drink and sweating the liquor out in no time!! my friends rushed me and thanked me for introducing them to the hottest spot they had been to in quite some time! made a fella feel pretty good =) the bartender on the roof kept our hands full of that do-it-fluid and the party was nonstop! i honestly haven't danced that much in my entire life and between cuttin' rugs and going up and down a few steps, everything i drank was worked off before the night concluded.we never made it back down to the first floor so again we missed out the live band, if there was one that late, but in due time.the weather was perfect for a night of dancing and drinks on the roof and all the sexy costumes only provided the icing on the cake for us.Tommy Stephens with a chicken in 2007. I had been told about this place a few months ago but just never made since i dont go out too much.but i was tasked with playing host for some friends from out of town and we decided to give it a finitely did not. ![]() Spanish Restaurants for Families in Historic Ybor.Restaurants with Outdoor Seating in Tampa.Restaurants for Special Occasions in Tampa. ![]()
